Meet Emily Ruth: A 43-year-old interior designer, artist, and devoted mother of two, Emily is
embracing a bold new chapter in life. After turning 40, she launched her own business, Interiors by Emily Ruth,
prioritized self-growth, and began living on her own terms. Passionate about creativity, nature,
and personal empowerment, Emily’s recent portrait experience helped her see her own
beauty, inside and out, and deepened her confidence as she continues to move forward with
purpose, joy, and authenticity.

Tell me a little about yourself (name, age, work, volunteering, family, hobbies)
My name is Emily Ruth, I am 43 years old! I am an artist, an Interior Designer, and most
importantly a mom to two wonderful children! I started my own business just this past
February as an Interior Designer. When I’m not running the kids around to their activities
or designing, I really enjoy spending time outside, walking, hiking, and enjoying the local
parks or lake! I also enjoy “me time” which typically consists of having a glass of wine,
listening to music, and painting.
When was the last time you were photographed professionally?
I’ve never been professionally photographed! Aside from school photos when I was a
child.
Why did you decide to participate in this project?
Turning 40 has been life-changing. I’ve stopped living for everyone else and begun living
for myself! This is a whole new chapter in my life, and I’m excited for the direction it’s
going!

How did you feel when you first decided to participate in this photoshoot?
Excited and a bit nervous!
What were your initial thoughts and emotions about being photographed at this stage of life
I have been learning to love myself completely, imperfections and all. I am not in the best
shape of my life, but I’ve been finding that it doesn’t matter, and that I am indeed beautiful! Seeing myself through the camera lens has allowed me to see myself as the
other important people in my life see me!
Did you have any concerns or reservations about the photoshoot?
I honestly did not!
Can you describe your experience during the photoshoot?
The hair/makeup experience was wonderful and really set the stage for the day! The
last time I was pampered like that was for my wedding, which was almost two decades
ago! I FELT amazing!

How did you feel in front of the camera?
Within minutes, I felt my anxiety melt away, enjoying the music and playfulness of Elena
I felt very comfortable.
How did you feel immediately after the photoshoot?
I felt worn out, but also felt incredibly grateful for the experience
What was your reaction when you saw the final photos?
In awe! Elena did an incredible job capturing who I am!

Did the photoshoot change the way you see yourself? If so, how?
Yes, I have always struggled with self-image and seeing myself as beautiful. This
photoshoot has helped me see myself in a way that I never thought possible!
How has this experience impacted your self-perception and confidence?
I have always been told that people admire my confident, outgoing personality, but for
most of my life, I feel that I have been masking how I truly feel inside, which is scared and
insecure. I am finally seeing myself as others do, and it is so empowering.
Did the photoshoot help you discover or rediscover any aspects of yourself?
It helped me see that what I thought were flaws are actually parts of me that I want to
embrace, because it is who I am!

Was this experience mostly fun, or did it have a deeper impact on you?
This had a very deep impact on me! I have always done things for others and never really
done anything for me. This experience, I did for myself. I am so glad that I did!
In what ways did it affect you personally or emotionally?
I am at point in my life where I am reflecting on things in my past that had deeply
impacted me and I didn’t even realize it. I have always shrugged off the statement “you
are beautiful” because I didn’t feel beautiful, and didn’t believe that I was. Some of
these photos captured me so well, that I am beginning to believe and embrace the
statement “ I AM Beautiful.”
What wisdom would you like to share with young women today?
Do what makes you happy, challenge yourself, and continue to try new things. Put down
the screens and embrace the world around you! Find beauty in something each day.
Keep a Journal! Look at yourself each day in the mirror and give yourself a positive
affirmation.

If you could talk to your younger self, what would you say?
It’s okay to be scared, to be anxious. It’s okay to cry! Never be ashamed of who you are.
You are beautiful inside and out, and you WILL do great things!
What are the best things about aging, in your opinion?
Knowledge! Learning something new each day, caring less about superficial things, and
appreciating the little things. Letting people go in your life that no longer serve any
positive benefits, making new friends and building new relationships that offer more
light in your life!

How do you embrace the changes that come with getting older?
I have always embraced change because with every new change, we are faced with new
challenges, and you have two options: choose to be just okay, or choose something that
can be absolutely amazing!!
How have you grown or changed since entering your 40s?
Leading up to turning 40, I decided to start making changes in my life. I changed my
eating habits; I found happiness and energy in working out every day. I began to put
myself first, which is something I hadn’t done in a VERY long time. I chose to get a
divorce, so I can be a happier and the best version of myself, not only for me, but for my
kids as well. I aligned myself with good people in my life, and removed the baggage.

What are some accomplishments or milestones you’re proud of at this stage in your life?
I found the confidence to be self-employed and started my own interior design business!
I am finding more time for myself, which includes painting, reading, playing guitar,
hiking, and enjoying the outdoors. I am making time for my children and creating
special times and memories.
Who or what inspires you at this stage of your life?
Tony has been my biggest inspiration. He has helped me to love myself, and continues to
encourage me or challenge me every day. I’m grateful have found my life partner for this
next chapter in my life.
Are there any role models or figures who have influenced your outlook on aging?
Pink as well as Drew Barrymore! They are both down-to-earth and real. They embrace
who they are, flaws and all, and I find that incredibly inspiring.

Do you have a life motto that you live by?
Keep Moving Forward
Do you have a quote or a phrase that represents you or your view on life?
“When we choose to trust the journey and embrace joy and love, we are free to fly.” And
“Around here, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up
new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious, and curiosity keeps leading us
down new paths.”- Walt Disney
What are your aspirations and goals for the future?
To continue to grow my business, provide the best opportunities to my children that I
can, and to travel!! I want to see the world.
How do you plan to continue celebrating your age and experiences?
Make time for myself, travel more, and make sure I slow down at times and allow myself
to recharge. I want to do many things and overcome fears. We have one life to live, and
I want to make the most of it!
